The Open Schoolhouse Building a Technology Program to Transform Learning and Empower Students eBook Charlie Reisinger Reviews
Excellent book! The author walks you through the philosophy, collaboration, and planning that is required to truly revolutionize the K12 student learning experience. Regardless of your thoughts on Free and Open Source Software, this book shows the amount of work required to change an education system that has remained mostly stagnant since the 1960s. If, however, you are an advocate of Free and Open Source Software AND part of the K12 education system, The Open Schoolhouse takes on an even greater importance. It shows that not only can you do what is best for your students and support the FOSS principals, but that the FOSS principals ARE what are best to creating life long learners and makers.
I've had the opportunity to hear Charlie Reisinger speak about the work he and his team are doing at Penn Manor School District and it is astounding. This book takes a deeper dive into this work and how it is transforming the school. After reading this book my goal is to get my school board to read it next. A terrific and inspiring read.
This book is written in a very conversational style, making it very easy to read. The topics are discussed thoroughly without going over the reader's head. Anyone curious about open source in education should definitely read this book.
Student centered narratives drive this story of how a school district took back their technology through open source software! Fast read with enough technical information to make this long time Linux user happy but explained in a way that anyone could understand! Should be required reading for school IT people!
This book is a must read for everyone in education who has anything to do with computers, either as an educator or as a policy maker.
Knowing there is a world beyond the big commercial companies is necessary to be able to make good policy decisions.
Charlie's book gives very good real life examples of the possibilities of Open Source software in education. It's written in a very accessible style and is a good read for both technical and non-technical readers.
I read this book in just two days. It's an excellent book. Every teacher, educator, and person, in general, should read it, especially those that relate to computers and put into practice the examples that are disclosed. I think that as an educator you must identify with the values that this book shows you and that helps to change the routine of the system of world education of these times. It is the only way possible and the reward is for everyone.
I first learned of Charlie from The Linux Action Show's coverage of the Penn Manor laptop program. I've been following the story where I can since. Charlie is an excellent communicator and his humor is reflected in his writing as well.
The adventure that he took his school district is amazing. I wish my school district would have had a Charlie.
I was inspired by our IT director because I knew there had to be a better approach. Charlie proves this approach not only exists, but that it can thrive and change students lives.
This is a very well written book by an educational technology professional who makes a solid case for the use of open source software and open source principles in K-12 education. This book provides a roadmap for any school or school system that values the importance of student engagement in the educational process.
