This book was interesting and informative. Some of the traditions are complex and difficult to follow, however, that would be typical of the Scots.I recommend the book for reading a little at a time. Pick it up, put it down and start reading again when you have a few minutes. Each chapter is self-contained and you'll find yourself amazed at the detail included in the book. I love Scotland, so for me, 'Old Scottish customs' was special to read.

AYE, lADDIE, 'TIS A GUUD BOOOK TA BE READDIN'
I have not yet received this item....should've been here weeks ago.
Good historical tale. I was interested in the facts. Writing style was boring.
I found the book to be very informative and an easy read. I enjoyed reading about their customs in the different regions of Scotland. Guthrie explained the historical aspects and also told of how the people of Scotland looked out as much as they could for one another. I found that rather interesting.
While I knew it was a 19th century book, I was still left cold by the plodding unimaginative writing. Unless you live in the locations mentioned (it seems to be geographically arranged- sort of) most of the rambling writing is irrelevant. It is very repetitious. There is nothing much about the origins of of the activities or their purposes. If I were researching an anthropology thesis perhaps this book would be interesting.
Like many people, I have a long family family history going back to my Scott boarder clan. I'm constantly interested in learning more about my family traditions and those of the country. This small book contains plenty of interesting information about the whys and wheres of these traditions. As I look at my own traditions and those of my family, it's easy to see several of these family little things still ring true.
